Action Team
10/29/2012 Meeting Minutes
Present: LHS: Jim Peacock, Paul Wagner, Jason Soffe, Lacy Fonnesbeck, Drew Nielsen, Brad Nelson, Gordon Geddes, Donna Starley, Curtis Jensen, Mike Mudrow
Students: Sadie Anderson, Chris Cottle
Parent: Sharilee Griffiths
Excused: Shane Ogden, Jill Lowe
Paul Wagner lead a discussion on Data.
Data is neutral. The data should speak for it’s self.
Inferences can be made from the data: problems defined, issues high-lighted, conclusions drawn, and decisions and future plans. (All are inferences that can be made from the data.)
Paul explained/discussed CRT results from the last few years (2008 - 2012) by reviewing graphs and charts (will be emailed to the committee members).
CRT’s reflect student proficiencies in the areas of English, Math, and Science; and also desegrated the data into subgroups (Caucasian, Hispanic, and Low-Income).
CRT data shows “gaps” between proficiencies in the subgroups.
Gaps and Gap-trends reflect that some students (subgroups) are being “left behind.”
Jim Peacock commented that Logan High looks “different” from 4 and 8 years ago, when his older children attended and graduated from LHS. Committee discussed some of the differences including: Class size, curriculum, instruction, social-economics/low income, changing student population, ELL students
Paul continued his discussion on data by reviewing additional data that might need to be considered while trying to “close” the gaps between subgroups at LHS.
Graduation rates – 26% Drop out rate at LHS
502 students with “F’s” currently (week of October 22, 2012)
Increasing number of Free/reduced lunch students (lower social-economic/low income)
Increasing percentage of minority population (approx. 33%)
Increasing percentage of ELL students
Paul shares what some school are doing to “change or close the gap-data”
Strategic Interventions --Goal is to catch up the failing student (support and help all students)
Review 6 components of “Strategic Interventions” at Lakeridge Middle School
